Fredericksburg, VA- After being the talk of her team upon her return from the North American Super Y National Finals, Brittany Webster was named to the Ninth Annual United Soccer Leagues All-League Team. Though the team went 0-4, Brittany was able to distinguish herself above the rest receiving top nominations for the honor. Brittany, a goalkeeper normally for the U-15 team, was called up to the team after Stephanie Delneky was injured and did the club very proud. Brittany faced shot after shot making save after save, keeping the Lady Gunners in every game they played. Her uncanny shot stopping ability and shear fortitude was a mark on the week as every player leaving the field was unanimous as to who their MVP was. Brittany is now automatically eligible to attend the Super Y-League ODP National Camps beginning Thursday, January 10 in Cocoa, Florida.
The highlight of Brittany’s week came when, after being down 1-0 and fighting to stay in the match, a hard shot came in high and was headed for the top corner and over her head. Brittany, showing a good display of footwork, scrambled backwards, leaving her feet to parry the ball over the cross bar to cheers from Gunners fans and opposing fans alike.
"Dan, my stepfather, ran across the house and flew in the door screaming my name and telling me to ’Get in the Kitchen now!’ I had no idea what was going on and to be honest I thought I was in trouble. I came to the computer and scrolled down the USL webpage and there was my name. I could not believe it. I did not even think anyone was paying attention. I thought we played well but the teams we were playing against were very very good. My play, I felt was strong, but we struggled a bit and this was a complete shock because of that," said Brittany.
With her award comes benefits. Now that Brittany has been selected, she has the opportunity to attend the National ODP Camp in Florida in January. This is a very high honor as the best players from the Nation involved in Super Y will be there particpating. When asked what this means to her she said, "I feel very blessed to be selected. In the first year of the club, in the first ever appearance in the finals, to be picked, I am just thrilled. Now my nerves are setting in a little bit, but I am very anxious to get down there and prove myself to everyone. I was not picked this year for the State Team and I believe this is my next chance to prove that I belong."
Brittany has been taught that nothing in life comes easy and has had to work very hard to improve to where she is now. Through rigorous club training, personal training, fitness sessions, and individual goalkeeping work she has put in many hours in order to get better. "I have had to give up a lot, like football games, weekends, and evenings, time that could be spent with my friends but no matter what, I wouid not do it any differently. I have learned to sacrifice in order to get what I want, but for a while I was not sure where it was going to take me. Before the summer I was not sure as to the kind of player I was and now I am very confident. I always wanted to play college soccer but I just did not know if I would be the kind of player that could. That has completely changed for me. Not only do I see myself playing college soccer, I see myself having multiple opportunities and that is really awesome."
Brittany has nothing but optimism looking forward. She is very excited about her short history with the Gunners and looks with even more excitement to the future. "The Gunners have presented me with so much more than I could have expected. I believe this club has a lot of potential to show to everyone and I am very excited to be a part of it. My sister is a little Lady Gunner and the opportunities for her and the potential for other young players is very high. This is a great thing!"
"I could not be happier with Brittany," said Head Coach and Director of Youth Development Eric Dutt, "She stepped in when we needed her, stepped up when she had to, and stepped out as the best U-16 Goalkeeper in the Tournament. This is a very proud moment for her, her family, myself, the club, and the future of soccer in the area. I am ecstatic about her selection. She has a very promising future if she continues on this path."
General Manager, Brian Shumate said, "I don’t think the award could have been given to a nicer person or a nicer family. We are extremely proud of her. Congratulations Brittany!!"
