The men are also well represented this year. Liberty University (13-4-2), home to PDL players Adrian Bumbut, Douglas Nyame, Chris Mandell, and Danny McGarry, won the Big South Conference Championship 2-1 over Radford University (11-9-0) and advanced to their first ever NCAA appearance. Liberty’s 13 wins are the first since 1999 when Liberty last met Radford in the conference championship, losing in penalty kicks. This time, however, was different.
Radford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute off a cross from a Radford Midfielder. Liberty evened the score in the 34th minute when Douglas Nyame, defender for the Gunners, headed the ball of a corner kick into the back of the net. Moments later, Adrian Bumbutt, Gunners midfielder, played a slicing ball through to a Liberty forward who went one on one with the keeper and converted the opportunity. Liberty University fought hard on defense through out the remaining time as Radford out shot Liberty 9-6. The Liberty Flames held on to win their first ever Big South Conference Championship and gain their first ever bid to the NCAA tournament.
In Liberty’s first ever NCAA appearance they fell 2-0 to Loyola.
Congratulations to all the Gunners and Lady Gunners’ successes on the college field this year.
