Gunners To Play At Fredericksburg Academy
PDL Begins Season May 11th, W-League Opens May 24th
FREDERICKSBURG, VA. -  (Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008) - The FC Fredericksburg Gunners are

pleased to announce that all home games for the 2008 season will once again be played at the Fredericksburg Academy Athletic Complex.  The Gunners enjoyed a successful 1st season thanks in large part to the Academy. 

 

“We’re excited to be playing at Fredericksburg Academy ,” said Gunners General Manager Brian Shumate.  “We think the upcoming season will be a tremendous step forward for the organization, and we look forward to sharing that success with the Academy and everything they continue to do with us.” 

 

The first game at the complex will take place on Sunday, May 11th, at 6 pm, as the PDL Gunners open the season against the Rhode Island Stingrays, and will follow that up with a home match on Thursday, May 15th against the Northern Virginia Royals, also at 6 pm.  The Lady Gunners will take to the Academy field for the first time on Saturday, May 24th, against the defending W-League Champion Washington Freedom.  Kickoff will be at 6 pm. 

 

The Academy will host three doubleheaders for the 2008 season.  The first one occurs on Sunday, June 8th, with the Lady Gunners taking on the Connecticut Passion at 3:30 pm, while the men host the rival Northern Virginia Royals at 6 pm in the nightcap.  Other doubleheaders will be played on Sunday, June 29th, and Saturday, July 12th, also at 3:30 and 6.

 

Ticket prices will be $5 per person.  Students and faculty of Fredericksburg Academy will be admitted free of charge. 

Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets as seating will be on a limited basis. 

 

The Lady Gunners will compete in the Northeast Division, which, in addition to Washington , features the New York Magic, Jersey Sky Blue, Boston Renegades, Connecticut Passion, Long Island Rough Riders, and in-state rival Northern Virginia Majestics.  The W-League, USL’s highest level of women’s soccer in the and . features a 41-team format in four conferences. The top women’s players throughout the world compete in the USL W-League through the summer months.  In addition to the league featuring international and former professional stars, elite collegiate players have the opportunity to also compete in the league while maintaining their collegiate eligibility.  The league is recognized throughout the world for providing elite competition for women’s players, while providing affordable family entertainment to many fans in each of the team locations.  The team will play a 14-game season. 

 

The PDL squad is a part of the Mid-Atlantic Division, and contains the Richmond Kickers Future, Virginia Legacy, Hampton Roads Piranhas, Reading Rage, and the Northern Virginia Royals.  They will play a 16-game season.  The schedule is augmented by participation in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and various exhibitions. Players have the ability to compete in the PDL throughout the summer months in a professionalized setting while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The league is the proving ground for players that aspire to reach the highest-levels of the game, while providing affordable family entertainment within their city.
